The differentiate between synchronous and asynchronous serial communication are:

Synchronous Transmission Asynchronous Transmission
In Synchronous transmission, Data is sent in form of blocks or frames. In asynchronous transmission, Data is sent in form of byte or character.
Synchronous transmission is fast. Asynchronous transmission is slow.
Synchronous transmission is costly. Asynchronous transmission is economical.
In Synchronous transmission, time interval of transmission is constant. In asynchronous transmission, time interval of transmission is not constant, it is random.
In Synchronous transmission, There is no gap present between data. In asynchronous transmission, There is present gap between data.
Efficient use of transmission line is done in synchronous transmission. While in asynchronous transmission, transmission line remains empty during gap in character transmission.
Synchronous transmission needs precisely synchronized clocks for the information of new bytes. Asynchronous transmission have no need of synchronized clocks as parity bit is used in this transmission for information of new bytes.

Data Terminal Equipment(DTE):

DTE is any device that functions either as a source or as a destination for binary digital data. It can be  microcomputer, computer, printer, fax machine or any other device that generate or consumes digital data.

Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment(DCE):

DCE is any device that transmits or receive data in the form of analog pr digital signal through a network.

RS-232:

RS-232 communication protocol is an old serial communication protocol developed by EIA. Mordern hardware designs use innovate serial communication protocols like SB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. But still, RS-232 has proven to be prominent.

The DTE-DTE connection according to the RS-232 communication standard is:

The DTE-DCE connection according to the RS-232 communication standard is:

RS-232 Connection: DTE-DCE
